Cornstalk
Intro(s)
1) Cornstalk was the leader of the Shawnee Indians. He was in many wars. He also had more than 3 names! If you’d like to learn more about Hokolesqua, read on.
2) Cornstalk is a very interesting man to learn about. He had almost 5 names, he led the Shawnee Indians in the 1700s, and he was a peacemaker. Please read on if you want to learn more.
3) Do you ever wonder about the history of Ohio and the Indians that lived there in the 1600s? How about the Shawnee Indians? Their leader? If you have wondered these things lately, then why not read my report?
4) "Who was Cornstalk and what did he do? Why does everyone seem to know who he is, except for me? Is there a way I can learn about him?" Yes, there is. All you have to do is read the following 7 paragraphs, and you'll be an expert!

The Beginning of his life
Not much is known about Cornstalk’s childhood, but people do know that Cornstalk was born in western Pennsylvania around 1720, but no one knows his real birthdate. He also moved to Ohio Country when he was about 10 years old.

Middle of Cornstalk’s life
When Cornstalk was older, he was in lots of wars. He even led some of the wars that he was in! Lord Dunmore, the American Revolution, and the French and Indian war were some of the wars that he was in. And when his tribe and him saw English people coming, they decided to make a big gathering away from Shawnee territory so that they wouldn’t invade their space. He also wasn’t happy that white people were living against Muddy Creak, but he didn’t bother trying to get rid of them. Finally, in 1774, he moved to Chillicothe.

Leading the Shawnee
As you can probably guess, Cornstalk led the Shawnee people. His leadership was also shared with Blue Jacket, who was also a Shawnee Chief. The tribe and chiefs were one of the most feared and respected, since they had won many wars.

Cornstalk’s many, many names
As the heading says, he was known by many things. Cornstalk had about 5 names! Of course, he was known as Cornstalk, but other names appeared for him, too, such as Wynpuechsika, Keigh-tugh-qua, Colesqua, and Hokolesqua. Most (but not all) of his names mean “blade of corn”, and the ones that don’t mean, well, something related to plants.

Late Life
Cornstalk was a peacemaker, and he liked to try to stop wars. On a different subject, though, Cornstalk and his tribe sided with the French people after a war. He also led a group that was against tribes from Virginia. (though I’m not exactly sure why)

Information on when he died
He was assassinated on November 10th, 1777 (at 57), when he finally had peace with white people. After he died, the Shawnee found a curse to believe. If you want to learn about it, go to __http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/paranormal_realm/117632__.

Extra information on the Shawnee Indians

The Shawnee Indians came to Ohio in the late 1600s. They were led by Blue Jacket and Cornstalk, but they lived in many states, including Georgia, Maryland, Illinois, and Pennsylvania. Although they were the most feared tribe, they still had fears of their own. One was that they were afraid of the English people invading their territory. They left Ohio at an unknown time.

SCIENCE

The Issac plant lives in the Temperate rainforest, where it never gets too hot or too cold. Temperate rainforests get a lot of precipitation: 80 to 152 inches every year. Condensation from fog makes them wetter and wetter. The soil in temperate rainforests don't have many nutrients in them.

The adaptations of my plant are:
  • It grows on top of another plant-- that helps it survive because it gets the nutrients by eating them off of the tree it lives on.
  • It is reddish-brown -- that helps by absorbing sunlight because of its attractive color.
  • It has big leafs--that gets rid of any extra water.

It's life cycle is just like a normal plant's perennial life cycle, even though it is an epiphyte. The roots just go into the log, not the ground. Its life cycle starts with a seed; then a bud of the flower; then a bloom, almost a flower; and a flower completely; it reproduces; and then, of course, a seed again. As I think I said, Issacs are perennials. Pretty much because they grow on perennial plants: trees. They live off of the nutrients the tree has. Its seeds grow on the plant, and are sticky, so when an insect comes the seeds stick to the insect... and fall off of the insect, onto another flower. It does the same for the pollen that it carries.

The flower can be up to 1 foot tall, and it is reddish-brown. One or two leafs sprout at the same time. It doesn't normally grow more than 2 leafs. It doesn't have a stem, unless you say the petals (herbaceous), or the tree it grows on (woody). The roots are small, grown into the log/branch they grow on ... on the tree.

Cassi, Your work here looks really good. You may want to try to add a few more details about the roots of your plants in the description part.
Mr. K.
I like how you noticed that I didn't have much information on the roots. That's a great idea to add!!

NARRATIVE
I turned in my narrative yesterday, but I haven't gotten it back yet to type. I will as soon as I get it back.
It has been 5 months since I turned it in, so I don't think I will get it back at all.
I didn't get it back, but here's another narrative:
Now You See Them, Now You Don't

SLAM!!! Jessy slammed the door of his room, panicking. He locked it and flopped on his bed. Whew... he thought. that was close.
He wasn't sure if he'd imagined it or not, but he'd just been chased through an entire county, a city, across 6 streets, and back to his house. What was that thing, he wondered, that thing that was green, slimy, and had 4 arms?
He couldn't figure it out.

"Jessy? Jessy, where are you?" his mom's voice came through the back door.

"In my room!" Jessy yelled back. "I was just chased through the state by a monster!!"

"Jessy, nonsense!" Jessy's mom said as she entered the room. "What kind of 'monster' was this?"

The conversation between Jessy and his mom went on like this for a while, and then finally ended with--
"Oh Jessy, that most've been your i--"

"No! It wasn't! I'm sure! There was no way it was my imagination! IT. WAS. A. MON. STER." Jessy interrupted, screaming.

"Nothing exists that is like that! Now, end of conversation. would you like some lunch?"

"Uh, mom? I... haven't eaten breakfast yet," Jessy answered quickly.

"Oh."

"Well, I guess I'll have some... AAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!"

"What?" his mom asked.

But he was already gone.
*
Jessy panted as he ran, sprinted, actually. He looked back to see if he had lost the monster that had chased him earlier. But it was there, and it had changed.

This time, it had one eye, it was red, fuzzy, had a tail, and three arms.
It still scared Jessy half to death, but it was different.

Jessy's focus went back to running for his life. He looked back again 5 minutes later, and it changed a second time.

It had changed into a monster with a long tail, was blue, soft, and had 3 eyes and two arms.

He ran some more, and started for his house. He looked back more, expecting a change.

Jessy was right. The monster's final stage was in a dotted outline of a blob of some sort. Suddenly, the monster-blob thing vanished right before his eyes.

SLAM!!! Jessy slammed the door of his room, panicking. He locked it and flopped on his bed. Whew... he thought, that was close.

He couldn't even imagine what in the world he was seeing. He crept back outside, self-conscious about running into the... the... the THING again. But he didn't. Right, he recalled, it disappeared. He watched everyone walking their dogs and riding their bikes. It was a nice, sunny Saturday, where green grass and benches surrounded him.

Suddenly, a person walking 2 dogs randomly vanished, like the monster had. First it became very big and bold, easier to see, then normal and blurry, after that, a dotted outline, then gone.
A millisecond later, the dogs did the same.

After Jessy witnessed this, he looked around and saw someone else disappear, too. Before he knew it, the whole neighborhood was vanishing right before his eyes!

Jessy started to panic. He ran up to an old woman reading on a bench to see if she knew what the heck was going on.

"Um, excuse me?" Jessy said as he sat next to her on the bench. "Have you noticed anything... uh... STRANGE going on around here?"

"Ppaarrddeenn mmee?" she answered in an old, creaky voice.

"I said 'have you noticed anything odd about this neighborhood?'" Jessy repeated, annoyed.

"Wweellll, ppeeooppllee sseeeemm ttoo bbee wwaallkkiinngg tthheeiirr ddooggss..."

"No, no, no. I guess I'll go ask someone elllllse..." Jessy watched her dissapear.

OK, he thought, weird, definitely weird. He walked over to a teenager who had been riding her bike, but stopped on the curb to examine her tire.

"Um, hello there!!" Jessy said a little too cheerfully.

"Hi. Do you have an air pump? My tire lost most of it's air." she responded as she looked up from her tire.

"Um, no, sorry." Jessy said back with a shy smile.

"Uh, why did you stop to talk to me?" she asked, confused.

"Oh, yeah!" Jessy had already forgotten about the disappearances of the neighborhood people! "Have you noticed anything weird going on around here? Because if you keep your eye on on person, they... well, see for yourself."

She looked at a man who was reading on his front porch. Jessy watched, too, as he disappeared.

"DID YOU SEE THAT!?!" she yelled. "Gosh, that's freaky. I wonder if you can prevent vanishing?"

"Maybe."

"I'm not sure if it's talking, because neither of us are vanishing as we're having a conversation!" she laughed.

"Hey, you're right! The lady over there that I was talking to didn't disappear until I said goodbye! That's it!" Jessy cried.

"I was joking." she said with a look that said Duh.

"But I'm not! It's true!"

"There's no one sitting over there."

"She vanished."

"That is really weird." they said together.

"OK," Jessy remarked. "We need to split up. I'll search other neighborhoods to see if it's just ours, or others too, and you see if you can find the prevention. OK?"

"Sounds good to me. I need to know your name and phone number if we want to talk. I'm Veronica. My number is 225-3792."

"Jessy, 781-3577."

"I'll call you," they said together.

Jessy walked around a little, when his phone rang.

"Hello?" Jessy answered.

"Just in case the prevention is talking..." said a familiar voice at the other end.

"Veronica?"

"Yep, I wanted to talk, just in case"

You could talk to yourself," Jessy suggested.

"Whatever."

Jessy walked farther as he talked to Veronica. Maklin Road read the sign ahead.

"I'm staring at the next neighborhood," Jessy mentioned. "And nothing weeeee... never mind. People are disappearing, like you thought."

"Oh. Sad." Veronica said.

"Yep," Jessy exclaimed. "Sad."

"Is anyone talking?"

"Yeah, on their cell phone."

"Watch them."

Jessy did as he was told, and watched the teenager vanish, in mid-sentence, along with her cell phone.

"Nope, she vanished. So talking isn't the prevention." Jessy answered.

"Oh. Then what else?"

Jessy watched as everyone in that neighborhood vanished, as Jessy had expected. Then he noticed that a dad and his daughter hadn't vanished yet, and they were eating wraps and sandwiches.

"Eating!" Jessy yelled into the phone. "Only two people haven't vanished yet, and they're both eating! That has to be it!"

"Perfect. I'm going to go back home and grab some snacks. Meet me by my bike in 10 minutes." Veronica said anxiously.

"Sounds good."Jessy answered.

"Bye!" they said in unison.

Jessy turned around and started chewing his nails. Better than not chewing at all, he thought.
*
10 minutes later, Jessy was standing by Veronica's bike, when Veronica came over with 3 bags of pretzels and 2 cans of chips.

"Wow." Jessy remarked, his eyes widening.

"I didn't want to run out, you know, I don't want to run out and vanish into thin air, you?"

"True, but I just ate lunch."

"Still!!"

They sat down in the grass and helped themselves to some chips. They ate in silence.

"Nice day," Veronica said, breaking the silence.

"Yep, except for the fact that everyone who isn't eating is now gone from the phase of the Earth!" said Jessy.

"Mm-hm" Veronica nodded.

They ate in silence some more.

"You thirsty?" asked Jessy as he stood up. "I'm getting water."

"A little."

Jessy waked toward his house, with a pretzel in his hand. He ate it slowly, so it would last. He got two bottles and filled them with water. Then he dialed Veronica's number. 225-3972.

"Hey, it's Veronica. I probably can't find my phone at the moment, so leave me a message! Bye! BEEEEP!"

Jessy hung up, with a bad feeling that Veronica had stopped eating.

When he walked back outside, he realized that her phone had been on vibrate (so she didn't hear it ring) and she had moved to a bench nearby, leaving her phone in the grass.

"Ugh! Veronica! You scared me! You didn't answer your phone!" Jessy shouted.

"Whoops! Sorry." Veronica muttered.

"It's fine. Here's your water. Now, my dad is an inventor. He invented hinges for doors, computers, and a teleporter. I'm sure he can invent something to prevent it and bring everyone back!" Jessy said.

"I'm not so confident," Veronica responded nervously. "Didn't you tell me that you woke up alone?"

"Yeah, but my dad goes to work. Do you want me to call him?"

"Sure."

Jessy dialed the numbers 831-5912. His dad picked up on the second ring.

"Hello?"

"Hi dad, can you invent something that keeps people from disappearing because everyone is doing that and eating prevents it but I can't eat forever and neither can you so can you invent it?" Jessy asked quickly.

"Uh..... sure, but it's getting dark. Hasn't your mom sent you to bed yet?" his dad answered, oblivious to Jessy's question.

"OK, invent it quick then, bye!" Jessy hung up.

"It's getting late. I should go home and get to bed." Jessy told Veronica.

"OK, me too then. Bye!" Veronica rode off on her bike, forgetting about the flat tire.

As Jessy headed home, he woke up. Whew, he thought, that was close.

"Jessy!" his mom called. "Get ready for school! Wake up! You're late already!"

Jessy got up and ready for school in a flash. In his extra time before the bus, he looked VERY closely at at everyone to see if they disappeared.

They didn't.

SCREEEEEEEECH!!!

Jessy got on the bus after his sister, and thought how great it was to have a compleatly normal neighborhood, and how awesome it was that it was all a dream.

Or was it?

FACTS ABOUT CASSI
  • On November 3rd, Cassi figured out that she knew how to write upside-down without a single mistake (unless you count a backward "J", but that's all) and it makes her handwriting neater, so she is making her letter (mentor poet) that way.
  • On November 6th, I noticed I can type with my fingers on (from left to right) a, s, d, f, j, k, l, ;, an my thumbs on the space ( ) T did thus withoxt looking (I did this without looking)
  • On December 10th, Cassi got her braces off!!

POEMS BY CASSI

SUBSTITUTES

When you really like your teacher,
it's hard to like a sub.
not the kind of a sandwich,
that you eat at a pub.

I'm talking about a replacement,
a substitute
sometimes they are weird,
like if they bring a flute.

It's really really sad,
if you have them for a week,
Especially if they are bad,
"Can I stay home PLEEEEESE?"

When your teacher comes back
a day after that
you are very very happy
you are a lucky cat.

The days are back to normal
You hope it stays that way
'till your teacher's sick again,
NO WAY!!!

Because...

BRACES

Braces hurt,
Braces sting,
You do not want these things

Braces pull,
Braces meet,
It isn't worth these straight teeth

Braces on,
Braces off,
Which hurts more I don't know at all.

Braces hurt,
A week away
I get them off
YAY-YAY!!! HORRAY!!!
